IT Service Advisory - 5/14/17

Issue:  On Friday, May 12, 2017, organizations around the world began to experience attacks from a ransomware strain variously known as WannaCrypt, WanaDecrypt and Wanna.Cry. This ransomware exploits a known vulnerability in Microsoft operating systems to encrypt a victim’s documents, images, music and other files until the victim pays for a key to unlock them.

The attack spreads by multiple methods, including phishing emails and via unpatched systems as a computer worm which can spread to computers on the same Local Area Network (LAN).  Microsoft issued a patch to fix this flaw for all Microsoft Operating Systems, even those such as Windows XP, Windows 8, and Windows Server 2003, which are no longer supported.

Over the weekend, the IT Division took steps to ensure anti-virus software was updated and operating systems were patched, however, the IT Division advises all CTC users to be especially vigilant when opening attachments sent via email.  Users should download attachments to their desktop and then right-click on the file and start a scan with Sophos before opening the file.

If you have any reason to believe your workstation may have been compromised, by this exploit or any other, power it down immediately and contact the IT Help Desk at 501-3101.  We will inspect the computer under safe conditions.

Cybersecurity experts expect even more dangerous strains of similar exploits to appear in the coming weeks and months.  An important layer of defense is a user population that is suspicious of e-mail attachments and unusual e-mail requests/links.

If you need assistance, please contact the IT Help Desk at extension 3103 or via email at help.desk@ctcd.edu.

IT Service Advisory - 5/4/17

Issue:  The IT Division has become aware of phishing scheme that tricks Gmail users into giving fake users (scammers) complete access to their Gmail account. The phishing email appears as an invite to share a document in Google Docs.

The ‘Open in Docs’ link/button that appears in the email is actually an application that gives scammers full control of your account (while also bypassing Google’s 2-step verification process).

If you receive an invite from a Gmail account that you don’t recognize or are expecting, delete it immediately. Google has also recommended that users take a moment to review their security settings via Google’s Security Checkup.

If you need further assistance, please contact the IT Help Desk at extension 3103 or via email at help.desk@ctcd.edu.
